Tuesday’s presser brought news of two players that are moving on from the Nittany Lions. Offensive linemen Noah Beh and Brendan Brosnan plan on leaving the team. Beh is seeking to transfer to Delaware while Brosnan is retiring from football due to health issues. Players leaving the team isn’t always the best news, but Franklin assured that both players were leaving on good terms. Both players were extremely limited in playing time in their careers at Penn State.
Franklin also brought news of several positional changes. Jonathon Thomas, Josh McPhearson, and Jarvis Miller are all switching positions as spring practice gets underway. Thomas, who changed position to linebacker last year, is now moving back to running back. McPhearson is also switching to running back but he previously played wide receiver-look for him to make an impact in the return game. Finally, Jarvis Miller is making the switch from safety to linebacker, giving a little more depth to a slim position group.
Replacing Brian Gaia
Every offensive play begins with the center, making it one of the most important parts in Penn State’s offense. Now that Brian Gaia has graduated, Penn State needs to find a replacement for this pivotal role. In his press conference, Franklin said that Connor McGovern is the leading candidate to replace him and will be the immediate starter for the spring, but he is going to give a few other players the chance to win the job as well. Zach Simpson figures to back him up while Michal Menet and Mike Miranda will get a few reps as well. From what Franklin said, it seems like McGovern will be the starting center come September. However, in order to help progress the other players’ developments he wants to get them reps as the starters in practice.
New Kids on Campus
In some rather unrelated news to the press conference, Penn State announced number assignments for the some new faces that joined the team this spring. Those number assignments are as follows:
Early Enrollee: KJ Hamler - #1
Transfer: Jabari Butler - #20
Early Enrollee: Brelin Faison-Walden - #25
Early Enrollee: Lamont Wade - #38
Early Enrollee: Mike Miranda - #73
Spring ball is officially underway which means the countdown to the Blue White Game has begun. The Nittany Lions will hit the Beaver Stadium field on April 22nd. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. Until then keep it here for all the latest Penn State football news.
